Winclone 2.2

Winclone allows you to clone your Boot Camp partition as a image file saved either on a separate drive or on your Mac OS X partition. The software can also create a Windows partition and restore it from the Winclone image file. Winclone 2.2 will clone Windows XP and Vista. I have also used it to successfully clone Windows 7 running Winclone 2.2 in Mac OS X 10.6.8. The software requires NTFSProgs 2.0.0, an open source suite of NTFS utilities, for it to function.

Keka is an excellent archiving utility for OS X (the best?).

Available: Download from the official Keka website
Several versions are available from the author's web site.
Keka v1.0.12 for Mac OS X 10.7 or newer. (Intel)
Keka v1.04 for Snow Leopard. (Intel)
Keka v1.04 for Leopard (Intel)
Keka v0.1.2.1 for Tiger (PPC)
Compatibility:

According to MadMac:
I just tested the Keka-1.0.4-leo.dmg (16.28 MB) link and it's only for the X86 Intel architecture, not PowerPC. The Tiger version runs like a charm on my G5.

Application file:

DART (Disk Archive/Retrieval Tool) was an internal to Apple and Developers only, disk archiving software. Like Disk Copy 4.2, DART can create byte for byte disk images of floppy disk media. It also uses compression enabling much smaller file sizes. Unlike Disk Copy 4.2, DART was never licensed for public distribution and remained largely unknown outside of Apple circles.

The DL above is DART 1.5.3, the final version from 1993.
MD5 checksum & filename: 834ff6ffdc12b2a10161e74944fdbdc7 *DART-153.sit

  • Features:
    Compatibility:

Can run on some emulators such as Basilisk II (build 142, Windows) and Mini vMac with limited success. Requires actual hardware with internal floppy disk drives for 100% compatibility.

    Does not mount disk images.

StuffIt Classic version 1.6 is a forerunner to StuffIt Lite, version 3.0 and later.

StuffIt Classic was distributed online as a $25 shareware, free to use for 15 days. There was at the same time an early StuffIt Deluxe version 2.0 also available which included additional features.

This software works very well with the Mini vMac and Mini vMac II emulators, other emulators and of course, actual classic Macintosh hardware.

    • Top DL: StuffIt Classic version 1.6 installer archived in StuffIt Classic v1.6 ".sit" archive.
    Compatibility:

StuffIt Classic cannot open StuffIt archives created by newer versions of StuffIt.
Note: Later versions of StuffIt can open StuffIt Classic version 1.6 archives OK.

    • System Requirements:
      • Any Macintosh family computer with at least 1 megabyte of memory.

    What is it?

    Compatibility:

PPC OS X - only tested with 10.4.11, here so far. May be suitable for earlier or later Mac OS's.

For a similar but Intel Mac native app, see: CleanEject

iClean is an AppleScript application and can be modified to suit using an AppleScript Script Editor.

If the Finder message (screenshot 2 above) asking for your admin password becomes wearisome each time you eject a USB thumb drive, use the Script Editor to include your username and password.

For example, this line is repeated twice in the AppleScript:
do shell script c with administrator privileges

    Change both instances to:
do shell script c user name "yourusername" password "yourpassword" with administrator privileges

The quotemarks are needed, substitute yourusername and yourpassword with your actual username and pass.

Since FastBack 1.02 was requested, I'm uploading this handmade backup I found in my collection. (HL in the title is my code for "hand lettered" disk.) I hope it will be useful until a proper commercial copy shows up.

The disk came to me at some point in the past - all I know is that I found it in my disk collection and archived it along with every other working floppy I own.

I have not tested the application but the image is clean (no viruses) and loads in vMac just fine.

[The application itself may not function in vMac due to the use of a custom driver for the floppy disk.]

    Compatibility:

Released in November 1987, and apparently remained in use until 1990. I would avoid using with anything over System 6. The help screens recommend against MultiFinder.

This is one of the first releases (1.1) of the famous compression tool StuffIt.

Top DL: Version 1.10 in a ".hqx" archive.
        Note: Timestamps are incorrect, sorry...

2nd DL: Copy of above DL with corrected date & time stamps, in a StuffIt v1.10 compressed ".sit" archive.
Note: Use a later version of StuffIt to extract (see "Notes" below).

    Compatibility:

Will run on at least System Software 6, and likely much earlier Mac OS's.

    • Notes:
      • StuffIt v1.10 creates archives of files only (does not archive folders or preserve hierarchy).

      • When extracting archives; StuffIt v1.10 does not preserve date & time stamps of files. - Modified date & times are added to the extracted content using the date & time of extraction (date & times are preserved when archiving, only).

      • When archiving data; Choosing LZW compression appears to be the safest option (no file corruption).
Huffman compression appears to be unreliable with this version of StuffIt.

DeSEA is a tool designed to remove "Self-Extracting" code (.sea) from compressed files. Compatible with Compact Pro, Disk Doubler and StuffIt (see below).

    Excerpt from the Release Notes:

    Compatibility:

    SYSTEM 6 CAVEAT:
System 6.0.x seems to have a problem with applications other than the Finder which change the Finder flags of an application. If a file which is being DeSEA’d under Multifinder (6.0.x) is currently displayed in an open window, its flags may not be set properly if the file is moved. It is therefore advisable under System 6.0.x to close the windows of files being DeSEA’d. System 7.0 doesn’t appear to display this obnoxious behavior.

    Application file:

Unity reads text files that you choose and puts them all into one file, also of your choosing. It puts writes them in the same order that you choose them. Unity allocates itself a chunk of your memory for a buffer. Under Multifinder, this chunk is 30K. If you aren't under Multifinder, the program allocates the largest possible chunk of your free memory that it can get its hands on. To do this under Multifinder requires some special programming, so i haven't gotten around to it (see Future changes).
